Longboard wheels collect road film, dust and small stones that can reduce grip and make wear harder to inspect. Cleaning them does not require harsh chemicals. Remove the wheels, keep the bearings dry and use mild soap with a soft brush.
What you need
Use a skate tool, warm water, mild dish soap, a soft brush, microfiber cloths and a towel. A wooden toothpick can lift stones from the urethane. Avoid bleach, acetone, gasoline and stiff wire brushes.
Remove the wheels and bearings
Take off each axle nut and keep the speed rings in order. Remove the bearings before washing the urethane. Water trapped inside a bearing causes corrosion, even if the wheel looks dry. Mark each wheel position if you want to track wear.
Wash the urethane
Soak only the bare wheels for a few minutes in warm soapy water. Scrub the contact patch, sidewalls and core gently. Remove embedded debris without cutting into the urethane. Rinse with clean water and dry completely.
Inspect wear while the wheels are clean
Look for flat spots, coning, chunking, cracks around the core and unusually different diameters. Minor cosmetic cuts can be monitored. A wheel that vibrates, exposes the core or has deep structural cracks should be replaced.
Reinstall and rotate the wheels
Once fully dry, reinstall clean bearings and speed rings. Rotate wheels to balance wear when appropriate, then tighten axle nuts until there is almost no side-to-side play while each wheel still spins freely. See how to tighten longboard wheels.
How often should wheels be cleaned?
Clean when grime hides the surface, after wet or salty roads, or before inspecting unusual vibration. Normal dry-road dust can simply be wiped away. Frequent deep soaking is unnecessary.

Can you wash longboard wheels without removing the bearings?

Can alcohol be used on longboard wheels?
Mild soap is safer. Strong solvents may dry or discolor some urethane formulas.
Why are my wheels still slow after cleaning?
Slow rolling is more often caused by dirty bearings, overtightened axle nuts or damaged spacers than by the wheel surface.
